Learn about WWOOFing or Workaway

Work Exchange sites…WOW!! What a great idea.

As the economy gets worse and we have lost all but two clients, I had to find a way to save money. I prayed for an answer and WOW did I get one…I came across two sites that are the best for work exchange. The first is http://www.wwoofusa.org/. This is the largest site and there are more hosts all over the world. This is a one year membership and costs more.

The other is http://www.workaway.info, the cost for one person is 22.88 and for two people is 30.50 for a two year membership. This is the one we signed up for because it cost less to obtain a membership. I contacted a host in Northern AZ that has an Alpaca Ranch. I went up first and checked out the property to see if our Vectra would make it through the 6 miles of dirt road and stayed for 5 days and just loved it. I fell in love with the Alpacas…what amazing creatures!!!

I came back to get the rig ready to go, we stayed for a week and realized that we needed to do some things with our motor home to be completely off the grid and more self sufficient. We plan to go back in Sept to stay a month, Hosts do have accommodations in their home for people who do not have their own. The requirement is to give 4-5 hours of work a day that is needed on the property for room and board. Now that is what I call a great deal and a great experience.

Our goal is to escape the heat of the summer and help folks at their property somewhere cooler, then come back to the Phoenix area and help someone in the winter. I am currently in contact with a couple who have a horse trail and pontoon business, for a winter stay. Doing this bartering will save us 3,600 a year in rent and about 2,000 a year in electric use. To me this is huge and I can still take care of my last two clients in Phoenix every two weeks and make money.

So no matter where you are in the world you can be what is called a wwoofer or a workaway participate and save money and learn new things…maybe you want to learn a new language…go to the country of your choice and immerse yourself in the culture. Hidden Sources Of MSG In Foods

What if someone were to tell you that a chemical (MSG) added to food could cause brain damage in your children, and that this chemical could effect how your children’s nervous systems formed during development so that in later years they may have learning or emotional difficulties?

What if there was scientific evidence that these chemicals could permanently damage a critical part of the brain known to control hormones so that later in life your child might have endocrine problems? How would you feel?

Suppose evidence was presented to you strongly suggesting that the artificial sweetener in your diet soft drink may cause brain tumors to develop, and that the number of brain tumors reported since the introduction of this widespread introduction of this artificial sweetener has risen dramatically? Would that affect your decision to drink these products and especially to allow your children to drink them? What if you could be shown overwhelming evidence that one of the main ingredients in this sweetener (aspartame) could cause the same brain lesions as MSG? Would that affect your buying decisions?

Aspartame – An Intense Source Of Excitotoxins
Aspartame is a sweetener made from two amino acids, phenylalanine and the excitotoxin aspartate. It should be avoided at all costs. Aspartame complaints accounts for approximately 70% of ALL complaints to the FDA. It is implicated in everything from blindness to headaches to convulsions. (NaturalNews) The Organic Consumers Association (OCA) recently added five additional brands to its three-month boycott of “fake” organic products it says are knowingly mislabeled as “USDA organic.”
In April 2006, the OCA launched a boycott against two big-name distributors of organic dairy products — Horizon and Aurora — claiming, “All of Aurora’s and much or Horizon’s ‘organic’ milk is coming from factory farm feedlots where the cows have been brought in from conventional farms and have little or no access to pasture.” Since April, the OCA says thousands of consumers, natural food stores and co-ops have joined the boycott.

In its July 27 newsletter, the OCA announced it is expanding its boycott to include retail chains selling “bogus organic milk from Aurora.” The boycott now includes Costco’s “Kirkland Signature,” Publix’s “High Meadows,” Safeway’s “O” Organics, Wild Oats’ organic milk and Giant’s “Nature’s Promise.”

The OCA is also calling for a boycott of Horizon’s organic soy brands — Silk soymilk and White Wave tofu — claiming that Horizon has “begun turning away from U.S. organic farmers and instead importing cheap organic soybeans from China and Brazil, where labor rights and environmental standards are routinely violated.”

The OCA is urging the public to send emails to the seven companies it is boycotting — dubbed the “Shameless Seven” — urging them to use quality North American organic products produced by family farmers. More information on the boycott can be found at: http://www.organicconsumers.org

Three Approved GMOs Linked to Organ Damage

In what is being described as the first ever and most comprehensive study of the effects of genetically modified foods on mammalian health, researchers have linked organ damage with consumption of Monsanto’s GM maize.

All three varieties of GM corn, Mon 810, Mon 863 and NK 603, were approved for consumption by US, European and several other national food safety authorities. Made public by European authorities in 2005, Monsanto’s confidential raw data of its 2002 feeding trials on rats that these researchers analyzed is the same data, ironically, that was used to approve them in different parts of the world.

The Committee of Research and Information on Genetic Engineering (CRIIGEN) and Universities of Caen and Rouen studied Monsanto’s 90-day feeding trials data of insecticide producing Mon 810, Mon 863 and Roundup® herbicide absorbing NK 603 varieties of GM maize.

The data “clearly underlines adverse impacts on kidneys and liver, the dietary detoxifying organs, as well as different levels of damages to heart, adrenal glands, spleen and haematopoietic system,” reported Gilles-Eric Séralini, a molecular biologist at the University of Caen.

Although different levels of adverse impact on vital organs were noticed between the three GMOs, the 2009 research shows specific effects associated with consumption of each GMO, differentiated by sex and dose.

Their December 2009 study appears in the International Journal of Biological Sciences (IJBS). This latest study conforms with a 2007 analysis by CRIIGEN on Mon 863, published in Environmental Contamination and Toxicology, using the same data.

Monsanto rejected the 2007 conclusions, stating: “The analyses conducted by these authors are not consistent with what has been traditionally accepted for use by regulatory toxicologists for analysis of rat toxicology data.”1

When eating at restaurants, it’s handy to have a knowledgeable waiter, waitress, or chef, guide you through the menu to help you avoid those GM foods on your “Don’t Eat” list. It is not too hard to identify the non-GMO options.

The first question usually is, “What oil do you cooked with?” If they use soy, cottonseed, canola, or corn oils, ask if they have anything that is cooked without oil, or if olive oil or some other oil can be used. If they say they cook in “vegetable oil” or margarine, it will almost always be soy, cottonseed, canola, or corn oils. If they have olive oil, be sure it’s not a blend. Many restaurants blend canola and olive.

To avoid dairy products from cows treated with genetically modified rbGH, in U.S. restaurants you will likely have to avoid menu items with dairy. Very few restaurants buy milk from non-treated cows, but it doesn’t hurt to ask. Industrialized nations outside the U.S. have not approved rbGH.

Since most processed foods contain GM derivatives (corn and soy, for example), ask what foods are freshly prepared. But check if packaged sauces are used.

Other potential sources of GM foods at restaurants include salad dressings, bread, and mayonnaise.

Here is a generic note that you can customize, depending on what’s in your “Don’t Eat” list.

I avoid processed foods with the above oils, or with soy and corn derivatives, including: soy flour, soy protein, soy lecithin, textured vegetable protein, corn meal, corn syrup, dextrose, maltodextrin, fructose, citric acid, and lactic acid.

I avoid aspartame (NutraSweet®), which is genetically modified.

Other Sources of GMOs

Hawaiian papaya (more than 50%), zucchini and yellow squash (a small amount only), Dairy products from cows injected with rbGH. Food additives, enzymes, flavorings, and processing agents, including rennet used to make hard cheeses. Meat, eggs, and dairy products from animals that have eaten GM feed. Honey and bee pollen that may have GM sources of pollen.

Infant formula, salad dressing, bread, cereal, hamburgers and hotdogs, margarine, mayonnaise, cereals, crackers, cookies, chocolate, candy, fried food, chips, veggie burgers, meat substitutes, ice cream, frozen yogurt, tofu, tamari, soy sauce, soy cheese, tomato sauce, protein powder, baking powder, alcohol, vanilla, powdered sugar, peanut butter, enriched flour and pasta.
